You Must See The Magic Purple Carpet of Pacific Grove, CA
“In spring the area becomes overwhelmed by a local phenomenon.”
Driving down the California coast alongside Monterey Bay is always a treat, but in the spring this area becomes overwhelmed by a local phenomenon.
Striking hues of pink and purple contrast against the ocean and sky blues creating a vibrant ambiance that is breathtaking and awe-inspiring.
People from all over the area, and far away come to catch a glimpse of the world-famous, "Magic Carpet." This unique sight is located just outside of Cannery-Row, in Pacific Grove California, on the Monterey Peninsula.
But What Is It?
The "Magic Carpet" Purple or Pink Ice Plant (Drosanthemum floribundum)
When Can You See The Magic Carpet?
Bloom starts in mid-April and can last until June. (We were there the last week of April 2022 when we took the photos for this blog!)
Where Is It?
Look for Perkins Park on your map. If you want to take advantage of walking the coastline, start at Lovers Point and walk away from Cannery Row. You can make it all the way to Asilomar State Beach. (We did the walk, and it is beautiful!)
Is There A Fee?
There is no fee to park! Street parking is available. In the past, parking has filled up quickly. In the last couple of years, we've been able to find parking even on the weekends. As we get closer to summer the parking fills up faster. Obey the parking signs and respect residents!
The History:
Where there was once poison oak lining the bluff, a local resident planted the first pink ice plant in its place. His vision of a garden near the sea changed the harsh landscape into something dreams are made of! His name was Hayes Perkins. Perkins Park, where the pink ice plant grows most abundant, was renamed after him in 1950.
Things To Remember:
This area is special to the residents and visitors alike. Please be mindful of where you walk and only stay on the designated paths.
The weather can change quickly. Dress in layers and bring a jacket. The wind can kick up and bring a chill with it.
Pick up ALL of your trash on the way out.
Things To Do In The Area:
The ever-popular Cannery Row is just down the street! Visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Ghirardelli Ice Cream, and Chocolate Shop, or shop local-based retailers.
Carmel-By-The-Sea is a charming little coastal town with unique houses lining the beach, that look like they came straight out of a fairy tale. If you're going to Pacific Grove, it is worth the short trip down to see this area.
You have to stop by Victorian Corner for the best breakfast in the area and the most friendly staff! It’s a personal favorite and one you can’t pass up!
Continuing down Highway 1 South you’ll pass Bixby Bridge on your way to Big Sur - the perfect place for hiking and camping. (Roughly 45 minutes)
Whether you're coming from out of town, or for a day trip, will you be adding the Magic Carpet in Pacific Grove to your bucket list?
